Sepia Saturday 251 - former Police Stations

To make up for missing the last two week's Sepia Saturday, I thought I'd get in early this week with my take on the theme ... I've gone for police, but not actually policemen as in this week's prompt, but a couple of pictures I have taken during my urban wanders around London of former Police Stations.

The first two pictures are from the former Police Station at Barnes, just south of the Thames in London, which I believe is now used for residential purposes. The lettering above the entrance is still present though, and ticks all the boxes for me as a ghost sign too.

My other entry for this week is a boarded up Police Station on the Harrow Road. This one is slightly less glamorous than the previous one in its present state but I'm sure it will soon be converted into something.

If you've seen me post on Sepia Saturday before from my vintage postcards or vintages magazines blogs, but you also like the content of this blog, then why not take a look at more of the posts in my In Search of Space blog, which covers my urban, rural and coastal wanders in search of almost anything and everything, including ghost signs, abandonment and decay, and disused railway lines.

  1. Is the door on the secure police station made of steel? I like the idea of leaving the old signs intact regardless of what the interiors become. Do we call this re-purposing?

  2. The ‘ghost sign’ above the door in the first shot is very evocative. I like your interpretation of the theme; it’s not easy is it? Barbara

  3. Closing of local police stations, or reducing the number of policemen associated with a station is a worrisome thing - especially in this day & age, but it's happening even in our small towns in Tuolumne County, Calif. Simply not enough money & cuts have to be made. But it seems to me county supervisors should be cutting elsewhere - other than police & firemen!

  4. Old doorways are an interesting photo theme.

  5. What impressive doorways nonetheless.

  6. Glad you jumped in as first this week...and those are definitely on-theme-doorways!

  7. A creative and thought provoking spin on the theme. I wonder about how the missing letters came to be removed. Knocked off by vengeful hoodlums or disgruntled ex-policeman?

  8. It's interesting when old doorways reveal functions long past. I I wonder if the stations were closed permanently or moved to more modern premises.

  9. I like abandoned and repurposed buildings and that kind of thing. Fascinating!

  10. I actually like the second doorway better than the first. Just something about it.

  11. The police station in our local town has just closed. The closest we get to the police is when their helicopter flies over.. Our boarded up station door is no where near as majestic as the ones you've shown us.
